MI State Rep. Chooses Sterilization After Trump Win

On February 5, 2025, Michigan State Representative Laurie Pohutsky announced that she underwent voluntary sterilization due to fears about the future of “reproductive health care” access under Trump.

As a teacher, I try to reserve the words “dumb” and “stupid” for only the most warranted occasions.

This is one such occasion.

This is stupid.

I know that seems harsh and maybe it is, but ignorance can be rectified with more information or the awareness of it. Stupid is irreparable. But it’s not just stupid.

It’s foolish. It’s childish, blind, wicked, and irresponsible. And because it wreaks of attention-seeking insecurity, it should be disqualifying.

You are a state rep in a BLUE state.

Yes, Trump won Michigan in 2024…by a whopping 1.4%. And it was MAGNIFICENT to see yet another swing state fall to common sense. So, I’ll graciously concede MI leaned red at the top of the ticket—though not even all the way down ballot.

But when it comes to your Fruit of the Woom…Mishgin is BLUUUUUUUE.

MI has some of the most progressive, least pro-life laws in the nation and they are codified. You can get an abortion AT ANY POINT in pregnancy. There are NO RESTRICTIONS on who can perform an abortion. You know this. YOU VOTED ON THIS. Your ability to have an abortion was never in jeopardy in Michigan.

Are you moving?

You were born in Michigan, went to college in Michigan, and have held office in Michigan since 2018. You were just reelected in 2024. Oh my, Ovum! Are you fleeing to a red state because your blue one (that you govern) is no longer safe or economically viable?? Amazing if true!

That’s the only thing I can think of because if you’re staying in MI and chose to voluntarily sterilize…oh baby…your fears about “reproductive health” make me very much afraid for your mental health.

Let’s go with low-hanging fruit first.

Do you know how babies are made?

I know this is often shocking to the left but there other ways to avoid an unwanted pregnancy—ways that are cheaper, nay even free, and less drastic than sterilization or abortion.

Are you familiar with birth control or self-control for that matter? It’s a thing. Take a michigander into it. I die. Speaking of dying…

Believe me, I can understand the need (perceived need if you are in Christ) to exercise control over family-planning.

My husband HAD TO have a vasectomy. Because I COULD NOT have my tubes tied. After having HELLP Syndrome during both of my pregnancies—liver failure, stroke, and heart failure the second time, I would not have survived a third pregnancy.

When people talk about the pro-choice hypothetical “endangers the life of the mother,” 👋🏼It’s me. Hi. I’m the mother.

I was absolutely dying. An abortion would not have saved me. Emergency C-sections did. My son was delivered at 32 weeks, 2 lbs 14 oz. My daughter was delivered at 28 weeks, 2 lbs 4 oz. No more babies for me. Which made my third pregnancy devastating—and a story for another day.

But we are not the same.

Sterilization because being pregnant will kill you is not the same as sterilization because if pregnant, you may not get to kill your baby.

And I say again—in Michigan you absolutely can kill your baby.

So, what then? Abortion is guaranteed. There are 0ther ways to prevent an unwanted pregnancy. What was your thinking here? Because it looks like you chose to make your personal choice an unnecessary public spectacle to serve as political opportunism for fear-mongering, or to validate some self-imposed martyrdom that conveniently paints your ideological enemy as the reason for your suffering.

It’s diabolical if true. How twisted and dark to undergo a permanent (without surgical reversal), medical procedure that will prevent ever having children…if you didn’t have to. It’s extreme self-harm and Munchausens rolled into one.

It would be like me undergoing radically damaging radiation and having my lower leg removed…for a bone cancer I do not have, because I was afraid I’d get the disease (even though this cancer is avoidable and RARELY FATAL) and not be able to remove my leg later. And also, maybe y’all should all think about having your leg cut off too! Did I mention that I’m an elected congresswoman in this scenario?

Which is it? Are you being dumb or deceptive?

Here’s the worst part—and it’s true either way.

I think your hubris and “I’m a millennial, bisexual scientist” need for grandiose oversharing has blinded you to the reality of how weak this makes you look.

Sterilization for fear you may not be able to have an abortion, though you absolutely could? My God. How much irrational fear you must have of man, of just one man—Trump.

Have you read nothing to indicate that for all of life and time people have survived under various rule and regime, able to find some semblance of peace, prosperity, or productivity in even the harshest conditions?? No stories about people who endured slavery, persecution, genocide and yet managed to carve out life, dignity, humanity, or beauty from the ashes?

Your unbearable burden is to be wealthy, influential, educated, and fully autonomous save for the laws of your very free land and the indirect influence of a man in a White House thousands of miles from you???

I hated every minute of Biden’s term and found him to be thoroughly corrupt and condemnable, AND YET summoned the courage to press on and kill neither of my children out of dread. We even had birthdays and Christmases while joking about the leanness of our budget and how only of one our teen drivers gets to drive until things change!!

How empty is your well from which to draw any grit or guts required to bear up under hard or unexpected things?

Let’s do remember that a child actually is not a terminal cancer diagnosis. A child is a blessing—an opportunity God uses to both refine and reward us. A child is a gift that if received rightly and unwrapped lovingly, reveals the better version of OURSELVES AND THE WORLD.

That’s the real kicker. It wasn’t impending dictatorship, or medical necessity that drove you. It was such utter incompetence as a human that compelled you to insist on living in the least sacrificial or inconvenient way possible. And trying to act wiser and more righteous for it. How dare you?

You’re not scared of being unable to have an abortion. You’re scared of being required to be a parent.

“I refuse to let my body be treated as currency by an administration that only sees value in my ability to procreate…”

—Laurie Pohutsky

And yet here we are.

Your body is being used politically by YOU—who do not see your value as one who can CREATE life, form and shape another human into a resource of joy, intelligence, and innovation for the world. YOU only see your value has one able to prevent such a contribution to society.

I would say perhaps your sterilization is best for everyone. But Christ in me knows your salvation would be better.

Grow up, Baby.

Welcome to “adulting.”

There are worse things than being pregnant or parenting in less than perfect conditions…like being a coward.
