Ford Family Sauce
I am giving you actual gold here, people. Liquid gold. Seriously. I am sharing something with you that is sacred, so that you may begin something sacred in your own homes. I am sharing a family secret—a family recipe for liquid love, in honor of the men in my family…so that you may honor your family.
The first meal I ever had with the Johnsons was barbecued chicken and their homemade sauce. Y’all. I had no idea. I had been living like a savage on store bought BBQ sauce my whole life. There is no other way now. This is the way. Get sauced in it.
I didn’t realize until years later the time that went into my father-in-law’s barbecue or my dad’s smoked turkey heaven. All those meals—they were serving us their time and attention on a plate.
We are missing that, fellas. Time and attention. Shared meals. Shared traditions.
I see kids every day in various degrees of progress or decline. Not one is suffering due to a lack of stuff. But we have some fires that have been left unattended and are at risk of going dark entirely or burning out of control. Go home. Give your best to the Lord. Serving Him well is serving your family well.
2 14-oz. bottles of Del Monte Ketchup
2 5-oz. bottles Lea & Perrin Worcestershire Sauce
1 small onion (chopped finely)
3 cloves garlic (chopped finely)
½ stick real butter
2 lemons (for juice and rinds)
¼ cup brown sugar
2 tablespoons rice vinegar
Sautee onions and garlic in butter.
Add ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, juice of lemons, brown sugar, vinegar, and lemon rinds.
Simmer covered for about 1 hour or until thick. REMOVE LEMON RINDS.
Rice vinegar is good because it is sweetened, but regular white vinegar will do. Lemon rinds will grow bitter if left in the sauce too long.
IF YOU USE OTHER BRANDS OF KETCHUP, YOU WILL GET SOMEONE ELSE’S SAUCE. DIFFERENT BRANDS CHANGE THE FLAVOR.
